Local Organisations Urged to Offer Placements

The Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme is an excellent national initiative set up by the Nuffield Foundation that places Year 12 science students into scientific organisations for 4-6 weeks in their summer holidays to carry out a research project.

Bursary students are in their first year of an advanced or higher level science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) course. Generally they are 16-17 years old. All students are motivated and enthusiastic young people who would benefit greatly from experiencing life in a scientific and technological environment within business and industry.

After providing a couple of placements, Green Biologics commented: “The students have proved to be intelligent, conscientious, reliable and enthusiastic, with a mature approach to their work. If another willing pair of hands is needed for a short project at little cost to the company, and you can invest the time for training, then this scheme provides that opportunity.

The scheme is administered efficiently and students are screened before being presented to compatible host organisations. We have found the placements to be highly successful.”

The students are expected to carry out a research project during their placement – either academic or industry research. They can be ‘technology’ projects, where the student is producing and testing a product, or ‘science’ where they are carrying out an independent investigation which will yield data that they can analyse.
The most important things are that the student must be able to use their own initiative, gain insight into working alongside practising scientists or engineers, use their skills and learn new ones, and be able to write up a report on what they have done which includes some analysis.
