More Information

Bursary students are in their first year of an advanced or higher level science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) course. Generally they are 16-17 years old. Our students are motivated and enthusiastic young people who would benefit greatly from experiencing life in a scientific and technological environment within business and industry.

What sorts of projects are suitable?

The students are expected to carry out a research project during their placement – either academic or industry research. They can be ‘technology’ projects, where the student is producing and testing a product, or ‘science’ where they are carrying out an independent investigation which will yield data that they can analyse.

The most important things are that the student must be able to use their own initiative, gain insight into working alongside practising scientists or engineers, use their skills and learn new ones, and be able to write up a report on what they have done which includes some analysis.

For 2010 in particular we are looking for new projects based around Maths, Statistics, engineering and for projects based in industry as well as academic research.
